10 pm and all’s well…

I am sitting here in a completely quiet house, late at night, watching the fairy-lights twinkle against the computer screen, their reflection bouncing across walls and windows alike. I have the blinds to the sliding glass door open, and wan moonlight is seeping into the room, almost like spreading fog. The only sound is of my fingers hitting the keys… even the fridge is not making the common blips and squeaks I am accustomed to hearing around the clock.

My gaze keeps sliding out the glass door to the snowy trees beyond. I love this late night, snowy world… it is the most perfect part of a stormy winter. I adore the peachy-pinkness of the sky where it meet the laden branches, getting lighter as the color just touches the snow. It is ethereal, a private world that I do not often glimpse. I am reminded of late night treks with a man I used to love. We would strap on snow shoes and hold hands, silently padding our way thru the woods to the frozen stream at the end of the nature preserve. We would share no words, just blissful smiles aimed at one another, slow dancing to the tunes in our heads. Sometimes, it would begin to snow, seemingly just for us, and when we got back to the car, I would shake the powder from my long hair as he grabbed the thermos of cocoa. He would drive me slowly home as I sipped the steaming sweetness from the metal cup that always smelled of his cologne, no matter how often I rinsed it. After he drove away, I would watch the taillights fade, and more often than not, tilt my head up to watch the moon until I felt frosty again.  I can see the moon tonight as well, and the glowing orb reminds me that I am still that girl of so long ago, and every little thing is gonna be alright…
