snowy morning…

I bundled up this morning, and went outside to clean off the car, shovel out the tires and front porch. We got only about 5 inches total, but after the graceful dance of the plows, over a foot and a half of snow was covering the back of my car. The sky was steel-grey, wind whipping my scarf around my face as I got to the task ahead. Cold does not describe how I felt; siting here in the warm house, I am just beginning to thaw. 6 degrees with wind is bitingly cold, no denying that.

The silence was broken only by the beeping of the plows, their orange lights a beacon flashing thru the trees. It was weirdly soothing; that completely-alone feeling, but knowing people are just around the corner. As I worked, I paced my breathing and soon fell into the routine of my work. Muscle memory is a wonderful thing, no thought required, simply running on auto pilot, knowing how to bend and lift without causing yourself pain. Breathe in; push into the snow. Breathe out; lift and release. Easy, mind-numbing, happy work. Looking behind me, I have physical evidence of what I accomplished. Tangible results… maybe that is why I like tasks such as shoveling, raking, sweeping.

I had hoped to enjoy a bit of a walk this morning, but I think I will have to postpone. I did get in a great, short workout with the shoveling and trudging back and forth. Coupled with the DVD I am doing and some yoga, I should exceed my exercise goal for the day. I am still steadily decreasing, but would like to kick it up a notch. I am beginning to feel impatient, but know if I continue focusing on myself for several hours a day, I will reach my fitness goals this year.

When my foxling is gone for a few days, I do not cook for myself. Lean Cuisine, salads, yogurt and eggs are as exciting as it gets. I was considering cooking something today for lunch, just to mix it up a bit. I have no idea what I feel like eating, let alone cooking, so will go raid the freezer. Usually the my dislike of cooking overrides any desire to eat something in particular. When you add in the cleaning time, it seems not worth it to me. We shall see.

Well, I am fairly warmed up now, and feeling good. It is time to hit the mat, so to speak. I have energy in the mornings, and if I wait until afternoon, I will not workout. Learning to strike while the iron is hot. =) This coming Monday, we begin The Historian’s next trimester, so I will have to see where “me” time fits into our full school days. Right now, I am going to lace up my sneakers and focus on today !
