I love this quote by Chogyam Trungpa …

“If there is not a complete sense of openness and space, then communication between two people cannot happen. Period. It is that simple.”

Communication we have with one another is often negotiation, to get what we want. That is an AGENDA, not communication. “Busy-mind” is no longer acceptable in my home. If my foxling wants to talk, I need to be completely there for her, no matter what is going on in my life. Present in mind, not just body. The ability to relate to exactly what is in front of me. If one wants to be of any good to anyone, learning to be there completely is the only way. How frustrating it is when you need to speak to someone, and they give you only a slice of their attention, not even making eye contact as they rush to finish a task on the computer or digitally chat with someone else ! I am no longer willing to “communicate” in this manner.

As we have been working toward this goal, we have seen a shift in our relationship. Openness and acceptance, while always there, are now at levels I had only dreamed of ! While working, we have also come to realize that the more we practice, the more we get done. Sitting for my hour in the morning, thinking and simply breathing, creates more time in my day, or so it seems. We begin each morning focused on the tasks ahead, the choices we can make and the ideas we have. By centering ourselves into our reality, we accept more responsibility and the peace that comes from knowing we put forth our very best effort. Going thru our days with a sense of relaxation enables to see and feel all that is around us. Without working so hard for it, we get so much more done with a plan and a peaceful heart. =)

There will always be times of rushing insanity. Our Western lifestyle seems to beget busy-ness as a way to avoid making decisions and dealing with oneself. Being mindful of this fact helps us stay focused when circumstances are not in our control.

As the sun comes up, I am reminded of the natural creation that is me. I need to put away the computer to get outside and breathe the icy-cold air. To hear the wind rustle the branches, and the birds fretting in the snowy dawn. I am alone for a few days and nights, and have no agenda but my own to fulfill. Working out, studying, long walks and much salad. Hot baths and quiet jazz in the evenings. A time to practice who I want to be.
